captain’s log: star date 0048

I am currently on a plane watching the end of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

I fell asleep right before the ponies would have been noticed of missing, and woke up in my usual place whenever I watch this film, Bilbo talking to Gollum.

I was able to regain consciousness right as Gollum asked what Bilbo had in his pockets, therefore I saw about a third of the film.

Anyways, the film is only of importance because I can relate to Bilbo in going on an unexpected journey. I love the feeling of home and safety and security, knowing where your handkerchief is and where you’ll be in bed for the night. But at the same time, I love the unknown and the thrill of an adventure, getting to explore and discover new parts of the world as well as people.

Reading Lord of the Rings for the first time has allowed me to see the differences between the characters of Bilbo and Frodo better. And I can full-heartedly say I am more of a Bilbo than I ever would be a Frodo. His love of stories and wanting to be a part of one, while at the same time being cautious and taking an entire movie to grow accustomed to the idea of the journey, just fits me. Frodo is well-spoken and well-mannered, ready to go on an adventure the same, but rarely complaining like his older relative.

I can not say what is to come, only that I hope its adventure is one that rivals dear Bilbo’s.
